The History of Larissa

The name Larissa comes from a mythological figure. A nymph who's face is depicted on some of the coins minted in Larissa. Larissa was the location of one of the fist mints of the ancient world. Coins have been produced here since 400 B.C.

Larissa was known for it's horses in ancient Greece and was the breeding place for some of the fastest horses in the ancient world. Larissa was also a very important agricultural center of the ancient world.

Larissa was the headquarters of Ali Pasha during the Greek War of Independence, and of the crown prince Constantine during the Greco-Turkish War of 1897.

In the 19th century, the town produced leather, cotton, silk and tobacco.
