Festivals
There are over a hundred festivals per year in the Larissa prefecture. Some are incredible and some are so small they are only called festivals so the village can brag about having a festival.
The Penis Festival
Of Tyrnavo
Well, it's not called the penis festival but it should be.
In the village of Tyrnavo, every year on the Monday that follows the carnival season, they have the fertility festival. This is the grandest of all the festivals in the Prefecture of Larissa. I don't even know how to begin to describe it. But I will try.
Every year, Greece has a carnival season. The carnival season ends on a Sunday night before the start of Lent. This first day of Lent is called "Clean Monday", and if you happen to be in the town of Tyrnavo in the Prefecture of Larissa, then you are in for a treat.
On the last day of the carnival, always a Sunday night 41 days before Easter, Tyrnavo has a large parade. This is a "must see". The parade itself is amazing. Clowns, Cheerleaders, Marching bands, Music, Fun. Everything that a parade should be. The unique part of this parade is the very last part. The parade takes on a penis theme. It is different every year, but one thing is standard, the parade ends with a giant penis shaped float.
After the parade, go the central square because this is where the giant man will be set ablaze. This man is named the "Carnavalo" and basically represents things that tempt you. Burning him is officially the start of lent. During the fire you will also notice an amazing fireworks display high above the town.
The next day is Clean Monday. The penis is the theme of the entire town. You find clay penises (is that grammatically correct?) being paraded in the streets, some hanging on the end of a fishing pole. The tradition is that if they wave the penis in front of you then you have to kiss it. Kissing the penis earns you a mark from a burnt cork being rubbed on your face. This black mark then tells everyone that you have kissed the penis and are in good spirits.
On this day, penis shaped candy is sold everywhere, bakeries make penis shaped bread. you will see things here on Clean Monday that you would have never dreamed of seeing.
And to make this festival even better, Free food, You can have a free breakfast at the park in front of the Profiti Ilia church. Breakfast consists of Beans, Pickled Vegetables, Olives and Bread. Simple, but the atmosphere is great. Meanwhile at the central square of Tyrnavo, they are making the "Burani". It's a big boiling pot in the center of town. In this pot they brew a mixture of wild weeds. After it boils for a couple of hours they pass it out to the crowds in little plastic cups and it's supposed to be an aphrodisiac. People will play pranks on each other all day. One such prank played on my father when he came to visit involved an old man who asked my dad to pick up his hat that had fallen on the ground. When my dad bent over to pick up the old mans hat, someone came out of nowhere and poked my dad in the butt with a clay penis.
While this is going on, most of the coffee shops and restaurants have clay penises in the center of the table as decoration.
You will remember this festival for the rest of your life. But if you don't have a sense of humor or if you are easily offended. Then don't come over.
Wine Festival
Of Ampelona

If you like wine, then you will love the wine festival in the town of Ampelona in the Prefecture of Larissa. Held around the last week of August or first week of September every year, this festival is the place that hundreds of wine companies all over Greece gather to show off their wines. It is also the place that hundreds of wine lovers gather to sample the wine. At least that is how it's supposed to be. What I found was a handful of wine companies, instead of the hundreds I was expecting. But, the festival was held in a beautiful park with man made lakes, canals, bridges, and a marvelous fountain with multicolored lights.
There were concerts, dancers, traditional music, but best of all, the highlight of the evening was a small five meter by five meter area filled with large barrels. It was from this small area that two volunteers were passing out free wine to everyone. There was a choice of red, white and retsina. People were showing up with five or six jugs to fill up and take home, all for free. I then realized, it was not "free samples of wine" it was "FREE WINE". And it was not just, "all you can drink", it was "ALL YOU CAN CARRY". I didn't know about this so I only brought a beer mug which I kept refilling for free. Expect to drink lots, and have a very good time. What more can I say about it?
Apple Festival
Of Agia

The apple festival is a weeklong celebration of the apple. it takes place during the first week of September. For 7 days you will be exposed to a large variety of apples and apple products. These are displayed in the street behind the large church of Agios Antonios. You will also see displays of agricultural equipment and almost anything that has to do with apples. There are rides for the children as well as puppet theaters and such. Also salesmen set up kiosks to sell a variety of products.
Don't miss the concerts, every night at the Central Square of Agia, at 9:30, you will be able observe a free concert. These concerts range in style from East Indian Hindu music, to Traditional Greek music to Hardcore Heavy Metal Rock music. You may want to check local listings for the one that interests you.
The highlight of the festival is the first night. To welcome the festival the city hall of Agia gives free apples, apple turnovers, apple pie, and a variety of apple products, But get there fast because the freebies only last for about ten minutes before they are all gone. and be prepared to do some gentle pushing as the competition is part of the fun.
